Pol Pot, originally named Saloth Sar, was the leader of Khmer Rouge. He gained his position starting in 1975. However, some people described him as a de facto leader which means he wasn’t the leader by law. Pol Pot believed that if everyone is equal, the country would return to its wealthy period again. Therefore, he controlled the country by force, took everyone outside big towns, and commanded that all educated people should be killed. His action caused more than 2 million lives. The Khmer Rouge attempt to bring Cambodia back to its golden age was bloody and unsuccessful. Pol Pot was overthrown by many other leaders. He was put both into jail and under house arrest.
